Our Financial Adviser, Jaikob Selby Rivas, joined our team in 2021. Since this time, Jaikob has worked his way up, earning a series of financial advice qualifications, as well as the respect of his fellow colleagues. Combining a professional advisory approach with a strong set of ethics and values, here’s Jaikob’s story so far…
Did you know that Jaikob has known our Director, Ben Clay since he was around 12-years-old? Jaikob decided on a career in finance after seeing the value of financial advice given to his dad and grandad. Having provided advice to Jaikob’s family for a number of years, Ben helped to protect his grandad’s assets after he moved into a care home.
Inspired by our approach and a love of numbers, Jaikob decided that he wanted to apply maths in the real world. From studying economics at school, he went on to graduate from the University of Leicester with a first-class degree in Banking and Finance. With a head for figures and enjoying social interaction, Jaikob wanted a client-facing role, where he could meet people and work with numbers.
After graduating, Jaikob worked for a short time with Barclays, and then started with our firm as our Financial Services Administrator. Through the SJP Financial Adviser Academy, he achieved his Financial Adviser qualifications at the end of 2022.
Jaikob advises on pensions, investments, and insurance. In recent years, he has gained a mortgage qualification and is currently focused on moving into estate planning. With our go-to cash-flow modelling tools, Jaikob can advise on retirement planning and inheritance tax, as well as investment and buy-to-let portfolios.
‘Quod justum, non quod utile’
(what is fair, not what is useful)
Jaikob’s school motto above has always resonated with him, and it underpins his ethics, values and professional approach today. He believes strongly in doing the right thing by his clients, rather than taking an easy advisory route.
By helping his clients navigate the complexities of pensions, investments, and large life insurance payouts, Jaikob can provide clarity and reduce any overwhelm. He enjoys spending time with his clients and making financial advice as engaging as possible, through visual means and proactive conversations. By asking his clients about their dreams and ambitions, he can align their goals with his financial advice.
Jaikob says, “Retirement is a scary prospect for many people and the freedom of choice can be overwhelming. I really enjoy helping my clients through their whole retirement journey and seeing their anxieties lift because they’ve received the right financial advice. I want my clients to look forward to meeting their Financial Adviser. I believe it’s important to go beyond the financials and help people to consider their purpose before providing them with advice.”
Outside of work, Jaikob enjoys golf and playing darts. As a semi-professional darts player, Jaikob goes to qualifying school so he can earn his professional tour card for tournaments in the UK and abroad. It’s a competitive sporting arena with around 500 people attending qualifying school, and only 16 cards available.
Jaikob’s claim to fame is competing against legendary darts player, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor. More recently, he has played young rising star, Luke Littler ‘The Nuke’, and alongside local Coventry champions, Adrian Lewis and Steve Beaton.
On a personal note, Jaikob is engaged to Hannah, and they are busy planning their wedding on 1st August 2025.
